10 Ways to Celebrate “World Piano Day”

Today, we honor World Piano Day at Marcheselli Music Studio, so named because it is celebrated 88 days into the new year, in honor of the 88 keys of a piano.

Why not let this day inspire you! In no particular order, here are just a few ideas for how to celebrate it:

  1. Today and as often as possible, let yourself play something on the piano that you truly want to play, rather than just what you think you should play.
  2. Listen to some inspiring piano music either on Youtube, or on your local classical radio station, or search for “piano music” on Spotify. You can also check out this music appreciation playlist from my studio by clicking here.
  3. Take a moment to read up something about a pianist or composer of piano music that you have always admired.
  4. Ask yourself, is it high time time to show your piano some love and get it tuned by a certified tuner, or upgrade to an 88 key piano if you’ve been doing without? The sonic range of the full sized piano makes it, indeed, the king of instruments, and this wide range has been an inspiration to centuries of players.
  5. Add some background piano music to your playlist and to your day while you’re cooking or what not.
  6. If it’s an option, make plans to attend an upcoming live concert featuring piano music in your area.
  7. Encourage the piano player(s) in your life by taking the time to listen to something that he or she is working on and appreciate it; maybe even consider collaborating!
  8. Check out a good musician’s movie that features a pianist or piano music. There are many out there, but some that come to mind are “Amadeus,” “The Pianist,” “Shine,” “Immortal Beloved” as well as “Impromptu.”
  9. Revisit your piano lesson notes or take up a piano-related study that you’ve been wishing to do, whether it be through a course, an app, or even double down on private lessons to help you reach your goals.
  10. Challenge yourself to listen to a composer of piano music that you normally would not think of listening to, just to get out of your comfort zone and to expand your musical palate. Do a quick search and treat your ears to the works of John Cage, Cecil Taylor, international piano music, and historical women composers of piano music.

Well, now that I’ve whipped up this list, it looks like I have got some things to get started today! 🙂
