Coaching Piano Players who Sing

Here is a friendly reminder that, as a recorded artist and cantor certified by the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, I have a keen interest in working with piano students who enjoy singing and who would like to learn to play piano and accompany their singing at the piano.

Could that be you or someone you know?

There is something about the instinct to sing while playing at the piano that has a very elemental significance to me as a musician.  While it is not at all required of my piano students, I am happy to spot students who wish to sing and play at the piano and to nurture them as singing piano players.  At times, I cannot help but be surprised that I do not come across more piano players who wish to sing and play at the piano.  Perhaps finding the inverse, singers who want to learn to play the piano, is much more common.

Nevertheless, for the latter group, I have noticed that the experience of learning to play the piano and the nature of the effort required can come as a shock to singing students.  For the former group of students, it can be challenging to juggle the reading of sheet music with singing lyrics, especially if the lyrics to a song are not well-known.

I am always happy to show students tips and tricks for learning how to manage the various skills required to learn to sing and play the piano at the same time, and I encourage singing students not to shy away from the technical demands of learning to play the piano.
